These Our Legacy Shoes Instantly Elevate My Outfits
GQ staffer Gerald Ortiz owns more shoes than Zappos, but he always comes back to one standout pair of squared-off slip-ons.
Most parents might say they don’t have a favorite child, insisting they love all their kids equally. I don’t have kids, but I do have shoes—and I definitely play favorites. My shoe collection is vast, numbering in the dozens, maybe even hundreds, but there’s one pair that’s been my go-to for just about every occasion: Our Legacy’s Camion mules.
You’ve probably heard of Our Legacy’s Camion boots, a zip-up style that’s gained a solid fanbase, including celebrities like Paul Mescal. But today, I’m here to talk about the underdog of the family—the Camion mules. Underestimate them at your own risk, because these slip-ons have become my most-worn shoes over the last three years. They’ve held their own through seasons, occasions, and countless outfits, and they never fail to draw compliments or a second glance from passersby.
The first reason they dominate my wardrobe? Pure convenience. As someone who’s constantly running late, the ability to slip on these shoes without bending over to tie laces is a godsend. Time saved equals stress saved, especially when every minute counts. Plus, they’re comfortable in ways many other hard-bottomed shoes aren’t. While they might not be suitable for a jog, they’re perfect for all the other daily activities where sneakers might feel too casual, and dress shoes too stiff.
But comfort isn’t the only reason I keep coming back to them. It’s the unique, slightly quirky design that really sets them apart. The mules have a gently squared-off toe box and a buckle strap that gives them a subtle ‘pilgrim’ vibe, but nothing too outlandish. They strike the perfect balance between being a little unusual without veering into “trying too hard” territory. Whether I’m pairing them with chinos, jeans, or even dressier trousers, they add a cool, laid-back edge to my outfits. Hidden under wide-leg pants, they even resemble their high-top counterparts, which is just one more way they effortlessly fit into different styles.
I also have to give a shout-out to their durability. Given how often I wear them, these mules have held up remarkably well. The Vibram soles, known for their toughness, have only recently started showing signs of needing repair, which, considering the mileage I’ve put on them, is impressive.
Finally, I have to admit, I just love how they look. I can’t ignore their flaws, but I’ve grown attached to them in a way that feels almost sentimental. Maybe it’s because they’re reliable, or maybe it’s because they make every outfit feel just a bit cooler. Our Legacy releases the mules in different materials each season, and I haven’t bought multiple pairs yet—but I’m seriously considering it.
They’re not just shoes—they’ve become a staple in my life, much like how a favorite child might be for a parent. They won’t be there to take care of me when I’m old, but for now, they bring more than enough joy into my wardrobe.
